How much should I save each month for a goal?
Turn a target amount and deadline into a monthly savings estimate.

The quick answer
If you assume no interest, subtract what you have already saved from your target, then divide the remaining amount by the months available. If your savings already cover the target, the additional amount is zero.
A $20,000 example
Suppose your target is $20,000, you have $2,000 saved and your deadline is 36 months away. The remaining $18,000 divided by 36 is $500 a month. This is a hypothetical example, not a recommended budget.
What changes the estimate?
- A longer deadline lowers the required monthly contribution when other assumptions stay the same.
- A larger target raises the amount you need to save.
- Interest may reduce the required contribution, but the assumed rate may change. The calculator excludes taxes, fees and inflation.
Make the estimate useful
Choose a goal label, set an amount and deadline, then drag the sliders to compare affordable monthly contributions. Type exact amounts when needed. Print the inputs with the results so you can remember the assumptions.
What if the monthly amount is too high?
Explore a smaller goal, a later deadline or a different contribution. The calculator cannot determine which tradeoff suits your circumstances.
